In 1987 Diana Vaughan Gibson invited Hallowell school children to the Homestead, her private residence, to learn about local history. The visit began a tradition that continues today. Hall-Dale sixth grade’s field trip on October 15, 2014 marked the 27th year of the “History & Stewardship Day” at the Homestead. Students rotated through five stations with speakers from various backgrounds. The “River” station was represented by The Penobscot River Restoration Trust. Speakers from both the Maine Forest Service and Viles Arboretum led the “Forest” station. Students toured through the house for both “History” and “Technology” stations that were led by local historians and Homestead curators, staff, and volunteers. Finally, a “Geology” station was led by a local geologist. The goal of the day is to bring History to life and to encourage stewardship of our local woods and waters.
