We also acknowledge the enslaved people whose labor in shipyards in Boston and on sugar plantations in Jamaica built the wealth that allowed the Hallowell-Vaughan family to settle this land.
We are grateful for our ability to work on, gather at, and share the land and buildings of today’s Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead. The difficult history of colonialism and slavery acknowledged here serves to strengthen our commitment to the stewardship of this spectacular natural landscape and its continued use by the people of Maine for generations to come. We are dedicated to the continued exploration and sharing of this history.
