The Vaughan Homestead recently received a Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund (MOHF) grant for which proceeds from the sale of “Wild Bucks” instant scratch lottery tickets are used to support outdoor recreation and natural resource conservation.
The Homestead is using the grant to help fund the trail work that is being done this summer by the Maine Conservation Corp. (MCC) during the month of July. The small team of 2-3 MCC crew members are building wood and stone stairs, cutting leaning trees and installing waterbars. They also recently led a training workshop for 4 volunteers regarding the installation and maintenance of waterbars and we would like to expand that training to others.
We had a great group for the workshop and learned how to install and maintain a log water bar and a plank and sheet rubber bar. We would like to plan several more workshops over the summer so that the trainees can become trainers and we can develop a small crew to help maintain and install these critical structures that keep the trails from washing away.
We will be continuing the project after the MCC finishes and would welcome any volunteers to clean steps and bridges, spread chips and adopt a waterbar.
